ADOPTED!!!!!!

Firstonthewire (Tobias) is a 12 year old OTTB gelding born in Florida and raced 10 times at Mountaineer in West Virginia. His sire Birdonthewire has produced a number of fine horses, including Kentucky Derby and other marquee racing winners. Tobias' racing name was Firstonthewire. As is the case in optimistic names such as these, the horse usually has trouble living up to the lofty expectation of his name and Tobias never did cross that wire first. In fact, he only crossed second once and third twice in his ten starts.

Tobias has been in the same home for 4 years now. Elizabeth rescued him, got him to health and put weight on him. She had wanted to show him, but due to lack of funds cannot. Even though Tobias has navicular he is still rideable and can jump as well. He needs a soft surface of course, reversed shoes, and if jumping a gram of bute a day. At this point Tobias does not like being ridden on trails...probably because the footing is too hard for him. He can be a little strong under saddle and needs a confident rider to get him going again. He has excellent ground manners, and just loves being around people! Greatest personality! Elizabeth found out the other day that Tobias LOVES pop tarts! He will snuggle all day for one! He clips, ties, trailers, bathes, and stands for the farrier and vet. Tobias is up to date on shots, dewormer and shoes but might need his teeth done soon. Tobias has a very sweet disposition and can be seen in Temecula, CA.

Update - November 2010

Tobias will be moving from the horse country of Temecula to the horse country of Morgan Hill and will be residing at the horse farm of Beth's father. Beth has two other rescues there but unfortunately neither is a good riding horse for her. Tobias is trained and well mannered and although does have navicular will be Beth's riding horse at the farm. This adoption took a long time was not facilitated until late March 2011. A photo is shown with Beth and Tobias at the farm (bottom of page).

About a year ago the Neigh Savers' Board voted on a resolution to cease working with private parties and take in horses from the tracks, breeding dispersals and auctions. This was done because our experience with private parties has been extremely negative. We do not have the horse under our control, we do not know the true condition of the horse or the circumstances and almost 99% of the time those trying to rid themselves of the horse were not telling the truth and did not deliver documents, etc. or stand behind any promises they made. Not any! However, the resolution was passed with a cavaet that it was at the GM's discretion. When I first began corresponding with Elizabeth I realized she was a decent young woman with values and morals and had tried to do the best for Tobias and was still conflicted and still trying to do the very best for him. Therefore, on this ocassion we did make an exception and for Elizabeth, Beth and Tobias this was a very good thing.
